
Prof Sithombo Maqungo is a distinguished leader in Orthopaedic Surgery, internationally recognized for his expertise in trauma care and injury prevention. With an impressive portfolio of qualifications and extensive experience, he has dedicated his career to advancing orthopaedic practice both locally and globally. Prof Maqungo earned his MBChB from the University of Natal before specializing in Orthopaedic Surgery, completing his FC Ortho (SA) and MMed degrees at the University of Cape Town. His pursuit of excellence took him abroad, where he completed Trauma Fellowships at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, USA, and Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, broadening his expertise and global perspective in orthopaedic trauma care.
In addition to his clinical qualifications, he holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education (PG Dip HPE) from the University of Cape Town, reflecting his dedication to medical education and mentorship. Currently, Prof Maqungo serves as Head of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at Groote Schuur Hospital and as Clinical Lead for Trauma Care and Injury Prevention within the Division of Global Surgery at the University of Cape Town. His work focuses not only on treating injuries but also on addressing public health challenges related to trauma.
Prof Maqungo has held prominent leadership roles, including President of the Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care Foundation (OTC), South Africa Chapter, and Past President of the South African Orthopaedic Trauma Society. He also serves on the Boards of GunFree South Africa and Childsafe, furthering his advocacy for injury prevention and safer communities.
